Romance

Romance movies represent a love story between a two people.  Within this relationship there is passion, love, anger, humor, and affection.  Romance movies have it all.  They incorporate some of the best genres within their films such as drama, comedy, and even can be a little scary at times (depending on if someone caught someone cheating, etc.).  But, as many people know and love, romantic films have the same essence. There is some type of love, whether it’s a tragic love, forbidden love, obsessive love, or young love. It all relates to each other.  The couples always will end up together at the end of the film. Even if there is conflict or suspense along the way, they end up happily ever after -which is what the audience loves about these films.

Now, when a company needs to start promoting their new romance movie there are a couple things they need to figure out.  First, they need to figure out the target audience for this genre. For a romantic film, it would be the age group of 13-40.   Viewers want to watch movies that they can relate to (for example their age).  I know personally that my friends and I wouldn’t want to watch a love movie about people in their 80s,  because we cannot relate to them.  This is mainly why the characters of these films are on the younger side.  For example, if there was a movie in theaters with a similar target audience, they would play this trailer because they know this age group will be interested in this genre.

When people think about romance movies they always think of the same thing.  A couple in love and having something stopping them from being together, but in the end they get together.  The audience loves how the couple will always end up together at the end of the film because not only are the expecting this from previous romance films, but also because it gives them hope.  When they watch the movie they can relate to the issue between the couple, but in the end, they work it out and find each other.  Many people have a loved one that they can’t be with because of their personal reasons, but when they watch these films and see the couples end up together it gives them hope for their personal relationships.

In one of the most known romance movies, “13 Going On 30”, the characters main purpose is to change the stereotypical view of models represented in the magazine.  This is a very common issue in our society.  In order to be considered a “model”, you must be an extra small or weigh a certain weight, but this movie proves that this isn’t true.  Jenna changes the whole look of their magazine to something unique, and different from every other magazine.  This attracts our target audience because not only does it invoke the romance, but it also involves a common issue in our society which is body image.  Young girls grow up thinking that a model must look like Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid, but this is anything but true.  To be a model doesn’t mean you have to look a certain way, be a certain race, it’s all about what you represent which is exactly what is showed within this movie.

Another example would be “Dirty Dancing”.  This film is about a girl on a family trip and meets a dancer at her hotel.  They end up falling in love with each other, but they never think they would be able to be together because a poor boy with a rich girl never works out.  They came from two different worlds and have no hope of something serious happening between them.  But, these are just the basic stereotypes that a worker couldn’t be with a rich young girl.  These types of conflicts in romance films are what the audience loves.  Every romance film has some type of conflict within their film and creates drama.  A romance film isn’t the same without the conflicts between a couple, which prevent them from being together.  The writers of the films make sure that they incorporate the basics of a romance film that every movie share.  These basic things are love at first sight between the two, the main characters are always attractive, the girl is always shy while the boy is outgoing and popular, or they both realize at the end that they were meant for each other.  These basic things in every romance movie are what draws the audience to love the film.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Gloria Stuart, and Frances Fisher in Titanic (1997)
